Toners and essences
Toners and essences manufactured by Celcode in Singapore: hydrating, balancing and exfoliating toners and light essences, with formulation and packaging notes.
Celcode manufactures toners and essences as custom or ready formulations - hydrating toners, balancing and clarifying toners, exfoliating toners with acids, and lightweight essences that carry actives in a watery base. They are aqueous, low-viscosity products, so formulation focuses on solubilising and stabilising the actives, setting the pH for the intended function, and preserving a water-rich product for its shelf life.

What we manufacture
| Type | Purpose | Typical actives |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrating toner | Replenish water after cleansing, prepare skin for serums | Hyaluronic acids, polyglutamic acid, plant humectants (hydration solutions) |
| Balancing and clarifying toner | Refine the look of pores, control shine | Oil-control actives (acne and oil-control solutions), soothing extracts |
| Exfoliating toner | Smooth texture and even tone with acids | AHA, BHA or PHA at cosmetic levels |
| Brightening essence | Even skin tone | Stabilised vitamin C derivatives, brightening actives (brightening solutions) |
| Treatment essence | Carry actives in a light, fast-absorbing base | Peptides, ferment extracts, humectant matrices |
| Mist | Hydration on the go, setting | Humectants and soothing extracts in a sprayable base |
Formulation considerations
- Solubility. Water-soluble actives suit toners; oil-soluble actives need solubilisers or a light emulsified essence.
- pH. Exfoliating toners work in a defined acidic range; hydrating toners sit near skin pH. The range is fixed during formulation and held over shelf life.
- Preservation. Water-rich products need a robust preservation system; it is designed in and confirmed under the GMP quality system.
- Sensory profile. Fast absorption and no tackiness are the usual targets; humectant load and film-formers are balanced in sampling.
- Alcohol. Formulations can be free from drying alcohol where the brief requires.
Packaging
Bottles with flip-top or disc caps, pumps, and spray or mist bottles; opaque or amber bottles for light-sensitive actives. See packaging and branding.
Testing and compliance
Toners and essences are stability-tested in their packaging, including pH tracking for acid products, controlled for microbial quality, and notified to the HSA before sale in Singapore with documentation prepared by Celcode (regulatory support).
How to brief a toner or essence
State the function (hydrate, balance, exfoliate, brighten), the skin type, the format (pour, pump or mist) and whether the product should be alcohol-free or fragrance-free. Choose “Toner or essence” in the product brief.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a toner and an essence?
Both are watery products used after cleansing. A toner typically balances, hydrates or exfoliates and is lighter; an essence carries a higher level of actives in a slightly more viscous base and is closer to a serum. The line between them is set by the brief and the market's expectations.
Can a toner contain exfoliating acids?
Yes. Exfoliating toners use acids such as AHAs, BHA or PHAs at cosmetic levels. The pH, the acid level and the label warnings are set during formulation and confirmed at the regulatory check.
